- Families can enjoy summer savings with Wightlink’s Kids Go Free offer
(20 August 2019) As summer rolls to a close, the August Bank Holiday weekend (Fri 23rd – Mon 26th August) is the perfect chance for one last adventure and the Isle of Wight has plenty in store for visitors. With events to delight children and parents alike, families can enjoy a great weekend or day trip to see out the end of summer in style. And with Wightlink’s Kids Go Free offer still running until 4th September, families can enjoy their Island adventure alongside some fantastic savings.
Wightlink’s top recommendations this August Bank Holiday include:
Jungle Fever at Robin Hill (23rd July – 31st August)
Family fun never ceases on the Isle of Wight and children will love Jungle Fever, which includes the opportunity to meet majestic life-sized African animal puppets at Robin Hill Country Park. The event features live music, character meet and greets – including the chance to meet Annie the giraffe, Jabi the zebra and Lenny the lion – as well as special jungle-themed performances. With the event finishing on 31st August, the Bank Holiday is the perfect chance to enjoy some jungle action before it’s too late. Tickets start from £24 per person.
Junior Track Days (30th July – 28th August)
For families with budding drivers aged 8 – 15, Junior Track Days at Wight Karting are a great chance to let kids be adrenaline junkies for the day. Priced at £45 for the day, children can enjoy their own driver training academy and, by the end of the day, will have trained to race from levels 1 – 5 and be ready for faster karts. These days offer a great day to keep the kids entertained while parents can sit back and relax, and perhaps even sneak off for a look around the Isle of Wight Distillery which is just five minutes away by car.
The 45th Island Steam Show at Isle of Wight Steam Railway (23rd – 26th August)
The 45th Annual Island Steam Shown is an action-packed event for families, and with much more than just the steam railway on show. Visitors can see the Haven Falconry’s beautiful birds of prey as well as enjoy a terrific line-up of live bands, fascinating crafts stalls and tasty refreshments. And of course the highlight of the day will be to settle back for a steam train ride throughout the Island’s beautiful countryside, as well as the chance to take a look at the vintage cars and motorcycles on display. Adult tickets are priced at £18 for adults and are free for all children under the age of 18.
Isle of Wight Scooter Rally (23rd – 26th August)
Also returning this year is the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally and Wightlink is offering 20% off ferry travel for those attending. Modern and vintage scooters will take over Ryde and Sandown for a weekend of events, including performances and a big ride-out on Sunday 26th. Further entertainment will include a number of bands and DJs to enjoy, such as Maybe Oasis, the Signatures and Target 5. Tickets are priced at £32.50 and can be booked on the Visual Impact site, while visitors can find out more about ferry crossings on the Wightlink site.
Own a Pony Day (year-round)
Hill Farm Stables offer their brilliant ‘Own a Pony Day’ throughout the year but August is a great opportunity to enjoy the experience with the best chance of sunny skies. Families can ride through the Island’s countryside as well as enjoy grooming, feeding and cuddling their pony. A day’s experience is priced at £70.
With all of this and more, August Bank Holiday is a fantastic time to head down to the Island and enjoy a last chance to try out some of the Island’s best summer events and activities. Travelling with Wightlink means visitors can reach the Island in just 45 minutes by car ferry from Portsmouth or in under two and a half hours when travelling by train from London Waterloo, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the Island’s wonderful array of activities.
