Discover Ferries is excited to announce Matt Miszczak, from Slice of Matt as our Vlogger of the month for July. Matt is a 27 year old half South African, half Polish content creator from Cape Town, South Africa. He offers an authentic, unpretentious take on travel through his vlogs, while sharing real, relatable experiences. Matt recently vlogged from P&O Ferries on a trip to Zeebrugge and we asked him to tell us about his experiences.
What did you like about travelling by ferry to Zeebrugge?
Prior to this trip, I’d only done day ferry trips across short distances, which are very different! I really liked how the travelling portion of the trip becomes part of the holiday itself, rather than with air-travel, how the flight is a more stressful rather than enjoyable portion of the trip. I think I’d genuinely choose a longer ferry over a shorter flight given the option!
Was there anything that surprised you, that you didn’t expect?
The live music in the show-bar on the Pride of Bruges definitely far exceeded my expectations. We were treated to a very talented musician with a very wide range of songs and he managed to fulfil every request. My friend and I ended up watching him close out his set on both the outbound and return journey we enjoyed it so much (and we might have enjoyed the bit where he invited us to join in on the chorus of Brown Eyed Girl a bit too much haha).
Who would you recommend the trip for?
Anyone who has the time! It is obviously a slower form of travel, but that does also mean it’s a lot more relaxed and means you don’t start off your holiday rushing and being stressed. It’s the perfect opportunity to wind down before visiting a new country/city. There are facilities on board that accommodate to any and every age group (kiddies corner, arcade, casino, bars, bingo etc.) and with wifi on board you can also just pretend like you’re in your own lounge at home and sit on your phone (except there’s a barman who will happily pour you drinks rather than a reluctant spouse).
Where you would like to go by ferry next?
I’ve seen that P&O offer a trip from Hull – Rotterdam which I would love to take! It’s roughly the same journey time as the Hull – Zeebrugge route, and I quite enjoyed my time in Hull prior to departure. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Amsterdam before to visit family, but I’m yet to visit any other major cities in The Netherlands so I think that would be my next trip for sure!
Any tips for people planning to go on holiday by ferry?
You don’t need to wait to have someone to go with you! Although I had a friend with me which is always nice, I feel like ferry travel is quite conducive to solo travellers and there’s definitely opportunity to meet and chat to people on board with all the common areas.
