What is EES?
EES, or the EU Entry/Exit System, is the new digital system which was introduced by the EU between 12 October 2025 and 10 April 2026. Its purpose is to strengthen the external Schengen border by keeping a digital record of everyone entering and exiting the Schengen area.
Who does EES apply to?
EES applies to non-EU citizens and non-EU residents entering the Schengen area for a short stay. Children under 12 will not be fingerprinted but all travellers, including babies, will be photographed and have a digital record created.
EES does not apply to holders of Schengen passports, residence permits and long-stay visas. Further information on exemptions.
Does EES apply when passengers visit Ireland?
No, EES does not apply to Ireland as Ireland is not in the Schengen area. However, as of 28 September 2026 you will need a passport to travel between the UK and Ireland by ferry due to UK Border Force data requirements. More information about travel to Ireland
Where does EES registration take place?
For most passengers this will take place at their destination port, where they will scan their passport, submit their fingerprints and/or have their photo taken.
At the Port of Dover French Border Control will conduct the EES registration in the UK before boarding the ferry.
During busy periods, it is possible that biometric registration may be temporarily suspended.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)
In addition to EES, a travel authorisation system will be introduced to enter the Schengen area, similar to the ESTA process to enter the US. This is not expected to be introduced before Autumn 2026 and passengers are advised to avoid any websites claiming to offer ETIAS services.
How much will the ETIAS cost?
It will cost €20 and will be valid for 3 years, or until your passport expires.
