A family of four can save more than 50% on their holiday travel by taking a ferry instead of flying, finds a new study by money saving blogger LottyEarns.

The study, sponsored by Discover Ferries, covers two busy periods of family travel – August and October half-term – and is based on a family of four travelling with two children aged 6 and 12 years old with four pieces of luggage.

Eight ferry routes were included in the report and compared with the cost of taking a flight to the same destination and hiring a car.

The results gave an average family ferry holiday cost in August of £372, compared to a family fly-drive cost of £828 – resulting in a family of four saving a massive £450 if they travelled by ferry.

The situation is the same in October – an average of eight ferry holidays compared with eight fly-drive options found an average price of £308 by ferry for a family of four, compared to £595 to fly-drive.

For more than half of the routes looked at in this study, savings of over 50% were possible when taking a trip on the ferry as opposed to taking a fly-drive, and some routes resulted in savings of over 80%.

“I’ve always thought ferry travel was good value, but I was still surprised to find just how much you can save by taking a ferry instead of flying,” says LottyEarns blogger Charlotte Burns. “There’s no doubt that there are lots of great flights deals out there, but when you’re travelling as a family and you factor in hidden airline charges ferry travel is hard to beat.

Ferry travel has far more to offer than just low prices. From spending time out on deck watching wildlife, or just the world go by, to being able to take far more luggage and buy more while you’re away, when you travel by ferry your holiday starts as soon as leave the port.

“It’s great to have a money saving expert give ferry travel their seal of approval,” says Director of Discover Ferries, Bill Gibbons. “As an industry, we strive to offer a great value service and an enjoyable, relaxing experience for travellers of all ages. I hope this report will showcase how much ferry travel has to offer and for such a competitive cost, especially for families.
