(2 September 2019) An exciting new exhibit has landed at the Hovercraft Museum in Lee-on-Solent and Hovertravel is operating a special excursion for Island residents to be amongst the first to see this new addition, and adding a kids go free offer. Visitors will be able to see ‘Falcon’ an AP1-88 hovercraft, gifted to the museum by her former Swedish owners Hoverline Ltd.
Louise Jenkins, Head of the Trustees of the Hovercraft Museum, explains: “I am very proud to have had the opportunity to assist in securing an AP1-88 for the museum as has long been a missing part of the collection. Falcon is a beautiful example being the last craft made by BHC / Westland Aerospace at East Cowes in 1991. She was completely overhauled before being placed into storage 10 years ago and her engines are in exceptionally good condition. “
Her arrival at the slipway at Lee-on-Solent was an exciting event in itself and it took five hours to position her into her final position. She was able to maintain hover for the entire move with her being towed from Hythe to our slipway and then winched and pushed into final location, this involved a final 360 degree turn on the land and grass at the rear of the museum.
On Saturday 15th September Hovertravel will operate a departure from Ryde at 1030, arriving in Lee-On-Solent at 10.45. The Hovercraft Museum is directly opposite where the hovercraft lands, so customers can cross the road and start looking around immediately.
