(8 August 2019) Hovertravel is using Cycle To Work Day to celebrate carrying in excess of one million bikes for free. Back in 1965, Hovertravel’s early craft were not designed to transport cycles but the current fleet can carry up to four bikes per crossing in designated areas within the luggage section at the front of the craft.
Loretta Lale, Head of Commercial at Hovertravel, adds: “Our service has adapted to answer the increased demand for transporting bikes. We have seen significantly more commuters travelling with bikes and this is reflected across our own workforce with more Hovertravel staff cycling to work than at any time in the company’s history.”
In addition to the cycle-friendly luggage compartment on the craft, Hovertravel has a bike shed and lockers at its Southsea terminal for commuters who wish to use their bike for just one part of their commute. Bikes may not be booked on the craft; this facility is provided on a first come, first served basis and there is no extra charge.
