(21 July 2022) The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company will support musicians performing at Yn Chruinnaght’s The Celtic Gathering 2022.
Each July, the week-long, Manx festival brings together musicians and dancers from across the celtic nations, to share and celebrate language, culture, arts, music, and tradition.
Taking place from 25th-31st July, this year Cornwall’s Brhyer’s Boys will be bringing their Cornish and nautical sea shanties to Manx shores for the first time. While the group’s repertoire is firmly rooted in the male voice tradition, their trademark style of free harmony means each performance is unique. Their travel is being subsidised thanks to support from the Steam Packet Company.
The festival also sees the return of Manx-born, Glasgow-based talent, fiddle player Isla Callister, also coming to the Island with Isle of Man Steam Packet Company support.
Isla will be premiering her latest composition ‘Creeaght,’ meaning ‘courage’ in Manx Gaelic. The piece explores the lives and experiences of women who have shaped the history of the Isle of Man.
Joining her is fellow Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduate, pianist, Anna Garvin who hails from Oban on the Scottish West Coast.
The two will be performing a series of concerts and delivering masterclass workshops to local musicians, details of which can be found through the Yn Chruinnaght website.
Organiser, Cori Philips, is delighted at the Steam Packet Company’s support: ‘The Celtic Gathering really couldn’t happen without the generous support of our sponsors. We’re grateful to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for subsidising travel for our talented artists, to bring music, culture, and tradition from across the celtic diaspora, into our towns, schools, and arts venues.’
Brian Thompson, Managing Director of the Steam Packet Company, said: ‘We are very proud to support events which celebrate the unique Manx Celtic heritage. I’m especially looking forward to Isla Callister’s debut performance of Creeaght, as the composition draws on a subject which aligns with what we as a Company strive to achieve. We wish the festival every success and would encourage people to take advantage of this offering.’
