From the spectacular treks through the Arrochar Alps to long walks in the hills around Loch Eck, Dunoon and the Cowal peninsula are excellent areas for walkers of all abilities. CalMac operates a fast and frequent passenger ferry service between the coastal town of Gourock to Dunoon, and with excellent rail links from Glasgow it’s easy to enjoy a day away from city life. An alternative route is to take the ferry to Cowal from Rhubodach on Bute which takes five minutes and on the way there is a stop off at the sculpture park at Caol Ruadh in Colintraive. Head round to Ostel Bay for the best beach in the area, or make your way to Benmore Botanic Gardens for its collection of giant redwoods, rhododendrons, and other rare plant species. Don’t miss the wildlife in Cowal: look out for red squirrels, red deer, otters, and the occasional bird of prey. Other local attractions easily accessible from Dunoon as a foot passenger include, Pucks Glen, Corlarach Forest and Kilmun Arboretum – all part of the Argyll Forest Park.
