This month Discover Ferries is delighted to have Claire Hall, of Tin Box Traveller as our blogger of the month. Claire is an award-winning UK family travel blogger, who has taken her kids on more than 100 trips across the UK and Europe in the past six years. She lives in Devon with her two daughters aged six and four, her husband and their dog. You can read about their days out and family holidays at Tin Box Traveller. As an expert in family travel, we asked Claire about her experience and tips for parents taking the ferry.
What do you like about travelling by ferry?
My very favourite thing about ferry travel is that it is so relaxed, and easy to entertain young kids. Being cooped up in a car or on an aeroplane leads to fidgeting and frustration. On a ferry, you can get up and move around, look at the view and explore the ship. It makes for a much less stressful start to a holiday.
What was your favourite trip by ferry and who you would recommend it for?
We loved hopping on Red Funnel for a day trip to the Isle of Wight from Southampton last Spring. Our journey began at breakfast time, when we started the day with a hearty cooked meal from the ReFuel Cafe, and ended with child-friendly snacks to push the kids on until dinner at home. Oh, and the grown ups enjoyed a hot coffee after a busy day exploring too. A family day out on the Isle of Wight was easily achievable by ferry. I wished we’d done it more when we were living in Hampshire. I can definitely recommend it for families looking for days out around Hampshire, Dorset and Sussex.
Where you would like to go by ferry next?
France! We now live in South Devon and I’m really keen to take the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff so we can explore Brittany.
What are your tips for people planning to go on holiday by ferry with a family?
The ferry part of your journey will be the easiest for entertaining the kids. If you have a long car journey on either side come prepared with a good supply of snacks, and plan in plenty of stops to stretch your legs and let the kids burn off energy. A music play list including The Greatest Showman, Mama Mia, and Moana soundtracks also keeps my girls happy.
